Appear Platform

The Appear Platform (Appear IQ) gathers context of use data and builds a model based on the information needs of end-users. Available services are filtered against this profile to determine what data is relevant, and this information is then proactively pushed to the wireless device.

Context-Aware Services

Context-aware services are applications that depend on the context of use, i.e. the situation in which they are applied. The can automatically appear or disappear, adapt on the fly, and behave appropriately in order to maximize the benefit for both the organization and end-users. All parameters, not only location, are taken into account when making services context-aware.

No Ordinary Mobile Platform

The Appear Context Engine (ACE) is the foundation of the Appear IQ solution—the next-generation mobile platform for context-aware services. The ACE implements a sophisticated rules engine, which determines what should be available to whom, and where and when it should be available. In addition, Appear Networks provides a multitude of context-aware applications (called modules), including push/provisioning, synchronization and device management. All of these modules are made context-aware using the ACE.

Key Features at a Glance
  • Network Agnostic: The Appear Context Engine only uses IP Networking, and is therefore truly network agnostic. Other solutions use protocol components to implement these features which are only present in a specific standard and do not run on any other bearer services.
  • Device Independent: The Appear client is implemented in Java using native modules for accessing OS-specific features, ensuring that only a small part of the code is unique for any particular platform and that the solutions is fully functional on any Java device.
  • Location-Based Provisioning: One of the most important features of the Appear Context Engine is its ability to distinguish different geographical zones, enabling the provisioning of different applications to each location and the distribution of proximity-triggered applications.
  • Click and Run: When an end-user enters a wireless network, his device is automatically detected and available applications are displayed as new icons. To access any of them, the user only needs to click once to download, install and run the complete application with the powerful Click and Run™ system taking care of the rest.
  • Independent Applications: The applications distributed using the Appear Context Engine do not have to interface the platform but can be run as they are. Therefore no customization or API is necessary for the distribution of the desired applications.
  • Single-Point Administration: All parts of the back-end server and local network proxies can be administered from a single remote location. Features such as authentication, monitoring, event notification, and usage statistics can be easily controlled using a graphical administration interface.

"The platform provided by Appear and Cisco is vital to us. It has improved our customer service, giving our people better and faster access to information; it has increased the credibility and trustworthiness of our workforce among our customers; it has boosted our image in the transport sector; and enhanced our organizational efficiency."

Edvard Brinck, manager of the wireless employee project at Connex.
