Appear IQ is selected as a technology component by Capgemini for the multimedia portal and Internet access on SNCF’s TGV high-speed train services

On-board internet and multimedia connectivity :
TGV to launch test phase in Autumn 2007

SNCF Voyageurs France Europe Press Release

Paris, 25 June 2007 - SNCF’s Voyageurs France Europe mainline passenger arm continues to innovate in on-board services by launching a multimedia portal and Internet access on its TGV high-speed train services. From autumn 2007, following a test phase, TGV will be providing this service for its customers and will operationally validate the project’s technical and commercial viability. During the validation period, the connection will be offered free of charge in First and Second Class to passengers on the recently-opened TGV EST EUROPEEN lines.
The creation of the service is a major technological challenge, delivering innovations that will involve not only train services …

  • a continuous connection at 320 kph,
  • rich multimedia content to offer customers a top quality service.

…but also the infrastructure deployed to carry

  • satellite solutions applied to high-speed rail services,
  • state-of-the-art telecoms technologies mainstreamed on TGV trainsets,

To see through this programme, which combines Wifi and satellite networks with very high-speed train services, and following a European request for proposals, SNCF has chosen the solution proposed by Orange Business Services, Capgemini, Alstom and Eutelsat.
Depending on the performance delivered and end-user expectations, SNCF will decide in mid-2008 how it intends to take the service, designed to be marketed to TGV customers, further.

  • SNCF is project manager, designer of the service and commissioning authority.
  • Orange Business Services is prime contractor for the entire project. It is the service integrator, the operator for the communication infrastructure (access, operation and maintenance of on-board and ground-based Wifi networks as well as for Internet access) and is also responsible for R&D, notably as regards the specially-designed satellite Wifi network routers.
  • Capgemini will develop and maintain the on-board portal and handle its integration with the information systems concerned by the programme: CRM, Internet 2.0, and OpenSource architecture. It will also contribute its Internet expertise to the new offer’s marketing positioning.
  • Alstom is responsible for supplying and installing Wifi equipment and on-board servers. The equipment is derived from its AGATETM e-media range of passenger information systems.
  • Eutelsat supplies the satellite network which links each train with the company’s Turin teleport. The antennae fixed to trainset roofs have been specially developed by Eutelsat to meet the stringent demands of high-speed rail transport.
