Appear Networks’ Appear Provisioning Server wins the GULDMUSEN “IT Product of the Year” Award

Appear Networks’ Appear Provisioning Server wins the GULDMUSEN “IT Product of the Year” Award and the Swedish Trade Council Marketing Prize for outstanding achievements in the exportation of Swedish technology.

Stockholm, Sweden - 29 January 2004 - Appear Networks, a Swedish leader specialising in context aware services for Wi-Fi networks, announces that its software platform APS (Appear Provisioning Server) has just won the prestigious “Guldmusen IT Product of the Year” Award. In the same week, the Swedish Trade Council has recognised Appear Networks’ outstanding achievements in exporting Swedish Technology, by awarding the company the Swedish Trade Council’s Marketing Prize.

The Guldmusen Award was devised in order to promote Swedish product development and to acknowledge Swedish companies and individuals who advance the IT industry in Sweden.

Known as “the IT equivalent of the Nobel Prize”, Guldmusen is said to “navigate the fluctuating development of the Swedish IT industry.”

The Panel this year was comprised of representatives from various Swedish IT publications and IT company managers. This year the judges were :

Lars Dahmén, Chairman of Computer Sweden

Thomas Peterssohn, Chief Editor of Affärsvärlden magazine

Anita Jonsson, Director IT & Telekom, Exportrådet

Ylva Hambraeus Björling, CEO, IT Företagen

Torbjörn Johansson, Technical Director, IBM

Mats Wennberg, Senior Advisor, IT-Provider

Last years’ winner was MySQL from MySQL AB.

Ann-Louise Palm, CEO of Appear Networks says, “We are highly honoured that Appear Provisioning Server has won this prestigious award. This prize is firm recognition that our product has proven its strength in live worldwide deployments. Our international client references including the Stockholm subway, Paris subway, French railway and France Télécom, to name but a few, demonstrate that we are continuing to build on our reputation as a worldwide leader in context aware services for wireless networks.”

These two prizes follow the recent release of Appears’ latest version of APS 4.1, Appear’s software platform, which:

- enables the precise positioning of a user within a WLAN hotspot up to 2 metres

- is dependent on a user’s profile, offering different services according to a user’s age, native language or job function

- depends on the type and characteristics specific to the chosen hardware (PDA .. )

- is defined by time slots allowing data delivery depending on the time of day

- allows integrators to rapidly carry out and deploy the control of services (via APIs)

Appear’s “Click & Run™” technology allows users to discover and download context-aware Wi-Fi services within a private or public hotspot. Context-aware services are applications that spontaneously “appear”, depending on varying criteria:

- Who you are: a passenger or a train maintenance worker
- Where you are: in a train station, in the family car, in business class or on a specific train route
- When you need information: final call alerts, traffic disruptions, on a specific date or time of the day

Speaking on behalf of the Swedish Trade Council, Director IT & Telecoms, Anita Jonsson says “Appear Networks has done everything right and has not only succeeded in inventing a new technology but they know how to sell it. The Swedish Trade Council is proud to recognise these major achievements by awarding Appear Networks this year’s prize for the Best IT Exporting Company. We wish Appear Networks good luck and continuing international success.”

The nominees for this year’s Guldmusen Prize were:
