Appear Networks demonstrates Click & Run™ technology with HP and Intel at Machine Tools and Robotics Congress 2002
Machine Tools and Robotics Congress 2002 showcases Click & Run™ technology, a combination of WLAN networks and handheld devices enabling machine-to-worker communication.
Stockholm, Sweden, 16 October 2002 - Appear Networks, a leading provider of wireless solutions for mobile workers, partnered with HP and Intel at Tekniska Mässan, Scandinavia’s largest technical fair, in order to demonstrate Click & Run™, a unique and innovative technology able to transform ordinary handheld devices into electronic multi-tools for industrial workers.
Appear Networks, HP and Intel deployed multiple Click & Run™ zones composed of wireless location-specific services from companies exhibiting at the fair, such as ABB, the Robot Café or the PLM factory (a co-operation between Intentia, IBM, Delfoi and Flexlink).
“The entire Fair was covered by several different Click & Run™ zones in which visitors used handheld computers to immediately access a range of services and information from various exhibitors and the Fair organisation”, explains Björn Haraldsson, project manager, Tekniska Mässan.

HP loaned iPAQs to visitors, enabling them to test Click & Run™ for the first time, and download exhibitor information, order products, monitor a manufacturing facility or watch videos from HP iPAQs. For example, a user standing in front of the ABB booth was able to select, download and save an ABB application directly on his device. The application could be a multimedia presentation, a product sheet, or even a functional interface used to manage a demonstration robot.
“We have selected Appear Networks as a technological partner to provide advanced services to our HP iPAQ as the company is at the forefront of WLAN applications”, said Rickard Kindlund, product manager for handheld and wireless devices, HP.
Eric Levander, Nordic sales director of Intel Corporation continued, “Click & Run™ is a very powerful tool. Services for local wireless networks are developing rapidly and Appear Networks is well positioned to play an important role in this growing market.”
This attractive showcase prefigured the use of Click & Run™ technology to exchange information via WLAN, between workers and machines, as well as between machines themselves.
“The manufacturing industry faces new challenges in order to increase efficiency, production quality and control”, explained Alex Cabrera, VP customer management at Appear Networks. “In areas such as production monitoring, equipment maintenance, employee communication and security,
Click & Run™ technology is an innovative way to drive down cost while improving productivity.”
“Click & Run™ technology can increase a factory operator’s capacity by 30 per cent by eliminating asset downtime and production delays”, added Åke Madesätter, project manager for the Robot Café and Idéfabriken. “It offers the possibility of having updated task lists and operating statistics, wherever you are within the facility.”
