As of December 7th, French Railways’ customers on TGV EST EUROPEEN high-speed trains will be offered onboard services on their Wi-Fi laptops, including a rich multimedia portal and Internet access.

This new service is proposed in TGV high-speed trains (both for 1st and 2nd class) on the Eastern France TGV train lines. TGV offers to its customers the possibility to manage their emails, follow the latest news, access their intranet, choose a restaurant or a show, surf on the web, play, follow their trip on a map or watch the news. As of January 2008, the service will also be available on the TGV connections in Germany, Switzerland and Luxembourg.

This launch is the beginning of a large-scale live test. It is today available for free on a few trains (3 trainsets are equipped) but the portfolio of services relies on an infrastructure that can be extended to the entire TGV fleet. The service strives for top quality of service: the Internet connection should be reliable (continuous broadband connection, via a satellite link and Wi-Fi relays on the ground) and the portfolio of services should be adjusted to the customers’ concrete expectations. The customer satisfaction will also be measured via a survey performed onboard in two consecutive steps (a commercial phase and a technical phase) and allowing answering to the following questions: who is the customer, at what price, in what conditions?

“Without a reliable technical solution, the service cannot exist. The system performance is the key condition to ensure a top quality of service to the customers. We do not want to disappoint! Technology hence represents an obstacle but the real stakes of the project are to match our customers’ expectations and to develop the business model. That is a challenge.” says Mireille Faugère, Director of SNCF’s Voyageurs France Europe mainline passenger arm.

The deployed resources are up to the challenge and its stakes. With technical innovations (connection at 320kph) and commercial innovations (rich portfolio of services), the deployment is a first in an emerging market. The new rich multimedia portal represents a €19m investment for the research phase alone. Its implementation was granted to major industry players selected after European Requests for Proposals, namely Orange Business Services, Capgemini, Eutelsat and Alstom Transport.

Depending on the results of the testing phase, SNCF will decide in mid-2008 how it intends to take the service further. The customers of TGV EST EUROPEEN could gradually benefit from the service for a complete coverage of the whole 52 trainsets by 2010. 2000km of lines would be then covered, i.e. the whole East network and its connections towards Germany, Switzerland and Luxembourg. From 2010, the new multimedia portal could be extended to the whole fleet of TGV high-speed trains in France (400 trainsets in total).

With this new offering, TGV innovates and enhances its service offering, based on real expectations from its travelers (business as well as leisure) resulting in a major differentiation advantage, two years from the opening of the French passenger train market to competition. For TGV, “high-speed Wi-Fi” is an asset for going to market, in France as well as internationally.
